Swing Safari

The Jonny Cooper Big Band's Swing Safari concert set for the Grand Arena in Cape Town-one night only!

On Saturday 29th November 2008 at 8pm, fans of the Big Band and Swing era can ready themselves for the Jonny Cooper Big Band’s Swing Safari concert at the GrandWest Arena, under the baton of Jonny Cooper himself. The show captures the nostalgia and unique energy of the Big Band era that has enjoyed renewed popularity since the release of swing hits recorded by stars such as Robbie Williams, Michael Buble and Harry Connick Junior.

In Swing Safari, the Jonny Cooper Big Band have reworked a selection of South Africa’s best-known songs into the 1940’s swing style, performed by some of the best South African artists and paying tribute to the finest composers and songwriters of that era. Patrons can look forward to all time great hits by Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller as well as Nico Carsten’s world hit Zambesi, and songs like Mama Thembu’s Wedding, Meadowlands and Suikerbossie, amongst others. The show recently enjoyed great success at the Aardklop Arts Festival with audiences raving about the unique transformation of iconic African and Afrikaans songs into the Big Band style.  Earlier this year, the world-renowned Jonny Cooper Orchestra was awarded the prestigious Big Band Hall of Fame Award in Miami, recognizing and honouring the orchestra for perpetuating, promoting and performing the sounds of the Big Band Era with integrity.

The impressive line-up of singers in Swing Safari includes Emo Adams, Gloria Bosman, Timothy Moloi, Jolette Odendaal, Cliff Benton, and The Afrika Mamas. Ollie Viljoen,  on accordion, joins the band for this event, as does Godfrey Ncina on percussion.  Tickets cost from R100 to R150 and all booking is via Computicket or 083 915 8000 with advanced booking recommended.
